Welcome. Please visit my 'gallery' or 'contact me' by using the menu at the TOP of this page.
My name is Susan Owens. I am an artist, wife, mother of two grown children and have lived in beautiful Washington County, North Carolina, along the Albemarle Sound since 1976. Though born and raised in central Pennsylvania, I have lived over half of my life in eastern North Carolina.
My parents provided me many opportunities with an emphasis on my education. I graduated Gettysburg College with a major in Biology and a minor in Art, Duke University with a Masters in Forestry and East Carolina University with a Masters in Science Education.
As a child, my Mother drove me to weekly art lessons at Saint Catherine’s Laboure. I was introduced to Sister Bertele. Dressed in her black habit, she was an inspiring teacher. She led her students through the use of charcoals, pastels, perspective drawing, oil painting and watercolors. It was Sister Bertele, who initiated my desire to be artistic.
Now recently retired from 30 years teaching high school chemistry and with fundamentals acquired from various instructors, painting has become my passion. I am consumed with it.
In my home studio, I work with a mixture of oil and cold wax applied with palette knives. My impasto style, where oil and wax are thickly applied, give my paintings a textured and 3 dimensional appearance. I find inspiration in my environment on the sound and rivers. I embrace color . . . the wonderful thing about color is that it has the potential to lift the moods of everyone that it comes into contact.
My art is available at the
Inner Banks Artisans' Center, Washington NC
Arts of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City NC
Dare County Arts Council, Manteo, NC
Chowan County Arts Council, Edenton NC
Again welcome to my gallery . . . it will change frequently . . . I am a prolific artist. Contact me with comments and/or questions. ENJOY!
